The Beckley Foundation was particularly proud to receive in spring 2007 the final approvals for the first study in over 30 years with human participants involving lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). Since the last phase of LSD research in the 1950s and 1960s, both our understanding of neuroscience and our ability to observe the workings of the brain with modern neuroimaging techniques has expanded exponentially. Therefore, the scientific use of LSD affords a great opportunity to expand our knowledge of the functioning of the brain by using LSD as a tool to alter consciousness. The Beckley Foundation is also investigating potential clinical applications of LSD as treatments for psychological as well as physical disorders.

Drug taboos may block a potential treatment for cluster headaches, one of the most painful conditions known. “I had a gun sitting on top of the computer monitor,” says Bill McConnell. “And I typed ‘suicide’ plus ‘headache’ into the search bar to leave an explanation for what I was about to do.” McConnell, who is [...]

This presentation by Dr. Ben Sessa is on the History of Psychedelic Research in the UK, with particular reference to the work of Dr Ronald Sandison and LSD treatment explored by the maverick psychiatrist Panel: Psychedelic Psychotherapy. This video is from the Psychedelic Science in the 21st Century, a conference in San Jose, California, April [...]

Amanda talks about the potential medical and scientific benefits of LSD at a Symposium for Albert Hofmann’s 100th Birthday in 2006. Introduction: Albert Hofmann’s discovery changed the world for the better by opening a door to a deeper consciousness. The molecule he discovered triggers a cascade of change which in some as yet unknown way [...]

LSD bears the stigma of controversy. Associated primarily with the ‘60s counterculture and the psychedelic music it spawned, the drug is widely considered to be of no value. LSD is generally thought to be dangerous and to imitate temporary insanity, where users hallucinate wildly and babble incoherent nonsense. While these assertions are not completely false, [...]

Every year, like a social drinker who wants to prove to herself that she’s not an alcoholic, I give up cannabis for a month. It can be a tough and dreary time – and much as I enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, alcohol cannot take its place. Some people may smoke dope just [...]

This recent article from The Financial Times reports on the scientific progress the Beckley Foundation has been making in the last few years. A British charity is stepping up efforts to rehabilitate LSD, one of the world’s best-known “recreational” drugs, for medicinal use. The Beckley Foundation, which numbers Professor Colin Blakemore, former head of the [...]

The first clinical study involving LSD in psychotherapy for many years has recently achieved full approvals from the Swiss authorities. This will investigate the safety and efficacy of LSD as part of a palliative treatment programme to ease pain and pre-death anxiety in those suffering from terminal illnesses.

The goal of this research is to increase the understanding of the underlying causes of Cluster Headaches and also develop a treatment plan using Bromo-LSD which will decrease the pain, severity, and duration of each attack.
