Worth a read… In a new article for the Guardian, Prof. David Nutt (Co-founder of the Beckley / Imperial Psychopharmacological Research Program and early member of the Beckley Scientific Advisory Board) talks about promising advances in the search for an alcohol substitute which can effectively be switched on and off.
By isolating the part of the brain that is responsible for the pleasant effects of alcohol (the Gaba neurotransmitter system), it should be possible to create a compound which affects this particular system – giving a pleasurable feeling of being a little bit drunk – but which cuts out the bad parts, like addictiveness or aggression.
Delving even deeper into what seems like the realms of science fiction, Nutt goes on to suggest that alongside this new ‘alcohol surrogate’ we could sell… the antidote! This opens up the possibility of drinking and driving – legally. Or going to bed having taken the perfect pre-emptive hangover cure.
And how many decades must we wait for such an innovative solution to move from theory to reality? Well, Professor Nutt has already tried one of his five alcohol substitutes and the accompanying antidote… it sounds quite successful.
